Pleasure
Pleasure
Psychologists refer to the pleasantness or unpleasantness of sensations as their ‘hedonic valence’, or valence for short. The reason why our sensations have good and bad valence is unknown, but the fact that they do clearly plays an important role in guiding behaviour. We seek things that feels good and avoid things that feel bad. In What Matter Feels, I argue that all interactions between energy and matter have valence at a fundamental level, and that nature exploits this property to guide the evolution of ever more complex systems.
The image in this poster is created using highly volatile inks, which ‘explode’ on contact with the surface of the marbling bath to create flower-like forms. This is a highly unpredictable process, which often runs out of control and contaminates the marbling bath.
