One of the most conceptually challenges aspects of What Matter Feels is that it highlights the role of ‘true contradictions’ in nature and in the way we perceive it. The European philosophical tradition, thanks largely to Aristotle, has tended to deny that any contradictions can be true. Yet in certain Asian philosophical traditions true contradictions are actively embraced, and their explanatory value is recognised.
One of the most basic true contradictions we encounter in nature is that between the object that acts and the object that is acted upon. Each acts upon the other with equal and opposite force. That which is pushed also pushes; that which is pulled also pulls.
The marbling piece in this poster is one of the last created in the series shown here, and uses a limited palette, which includes some gold, to create a dynamic vortex that is reminiscent of the yin-yang symbol (taijitu) that is of central importance to philosophical traditions such as Taoism.Original artwork: 2023, Ink, gold pigment, and paint on paper, 60 x 60 cm.
