Agency

We have agency. In other words, we have a sense of our own existence and can act in line with our intentions and needs. It seems obvious that many other animals such as cats and dogs also have agency. Contemporary philosophers and scientists are debating how far down the evolutionary chain agency occurs. Some, like Nick Lane, Philip Ball and Arthur Reber, have suggested that even single-celled organisms may have a simple sense of agency. In What Matter Feels I suggest that agency may extend even further, and that all matter has some primordial sense of its own existence and some sense of purpose. We do not see this 'mind side' of matter, however, when observing it from the outside. 

The image in this poster is created using a combination of acrylic paints and highly volatile inks to create the flower-like forms. Like many of the works in this series, the forms are arranged in groups of three. This triadic structure occurs frequently in nature as it is one of the simplest and most stable arrangements of matter. (Original artwork: 2023, Ink, pastel, and paint on paper, 60 x 60 cm.)

• Our poster is free from or low in OBA (optical brightener additives). This ensures that the natural white colour of the paper remains consistent under different lighting conditions. In contrast, the colour of papers that contain optical brighteners can shift depending on the light source. Additionally, the colour of OBA-free paper remains more consistent over time so that you can enjoy the poster for years without any shifts.
• We use FSC-certified paper or equivalent certifications depending on regional availability. It’s better for the people and the planet.
• Each poster is shipped in robust packaging, ensuring it arrives safe and secure.
• Paper sizes may vary slightly by region. For the US and Canada, the measurement is in inches, while for the rest of the world, it is in centimetres.
