The concept of energy is of central importance to the ideas presented in What Matter Feels. It took over 150 years for natural philosophers and scientists to work out the basic concept of energy and how it can be measured. Yet even today the exact nature of energy remains uncertain. In physics it is usually defined as the “capacity to do work”, which means how much force can be applied to an object to move it a certain distance against resistance.

Like most definitions in physics, this definition tells us only about what we can observe and measure from the outside of the system we are studying. It tells us nothing about what it is like to be that system from its own point of view. I propose a new property of matter called Experience (which is a technical term that is different from the way we use 'experience' in everyday language) that matter acquires when work is done on it.

One of the most common techniques in paper marbling is the use of needles and combs that are dragged through the ink on the surface of the bath to create intricate patterns. In this piece I created a vortex in the paint with a skewer, which gives the impression that the patterns are being sucked into a black hole.
