We often assume that minds evolved to serve the interests of living matter. But perhaps the opposite is true—that living matter evolved to serve the interests of minds. In What Matter Feels the argument is made that all matter has mental states from its internal perspective. These states cannot be observed from the outside, which is the perspective scientists normally adopt when studying the world. But they can be felt or experienced from the inside of the matter. The most obvious example of material systems that have mental states from an internal perspective is us. 

The triadic structure used in this marbling piece occurs frequently throughout this series. The patterns are reminiscent of the eye spots that appear on creatures like moths and butterflies, sometimes having a role in camouflaging the insect or alarming predators. In contrast, the colour of papers that contain optical brighteners can shift depending on the light source. Additionally, the colour of OBA-free paper remains more consistent over time so that you can enjoy the poster for years without any shifts.
