We often assume that minds evolved to serve the interests of living matter. But perhaps the opposite is true—that living matter evolved to serve the interests of minds. In What Matter Feels the argument is made all matter has mental properties from its internal perspective. These properties cannot be observed from the outside, which is the perspective scientists normally adopt when studying the world. But they can be felt or experienced from the inside of the matter. The most obvious example of material systems that have mental properties from an internal perspective is us.
The triadic structure used in this marbling piece occurs frequently throughout this series. The patterns are reminiscent of the eye spots that appear on creatures like moths and butterflies, sometimes having a role in camouflaging the insect or alarming predators.
