Peace

It is a remarkable fact that everything that exists and happens in nature is a result of forces acting on matter. Nothing in nature moves (or, more strictly, changes its motion) without being acted on by a force exerted by another system. When all the forces acting in a particular system balance out, the system is said to be at equilibrium, and all changes in motion cease. All activity in the cosmos tends towards equilibrium, although due to many imbalances in the distribution of energy the cosmos remains in a perpetual state of change, even if local areas of the universe are at peace.  

The image in this work uses metallic pigments alongside more traditional inks and paints in the marbling process. The metallic pigment is notoriously difficult to work with as it tends not to stick well to the paper and sometimes the most satisfying compositions are lost during the final washing process. In this case, the lustre of the gold pigment contrasts highly with the deep black at the centre of the vortex which, on close inspection, contains a miniature cosmos.
